We welcome forward thinkers, freedom chasers and all those demanding better, cleaner energy to join us.Summary of Role:The Sr. Director of Platform firmware engineering leads the team that designs, develops, and maintains SunPower's embedded monitoring and control platform which comprises the operating system (Linux, ZephyrOS), as well as various applications such as device and cloud communication. The scope of the platform Firmware team includes commissioning, IT security, cloud integration and maintenance of a fleet of thousands of devices. Your leadership will have invaluable impact building a world class firmware development team. Your team will enable SunPower's value-added monitoring and control capabilities.   • Develop, mentor, upskill team members. Cultivate positive culture and inclusive work environment. Set SMART team goals in line with organization objectives and provide support to help the team meet its goals.
  • Conduct performance discussions, set individual OKRs, provide constructive feedback.
  • Lead development team using Agile approaches to build a world class engineering team that high quality, industry leading solutions in a timely manner
  • Own and promote best practices in SLDC including test automation, continuous integration/ continuous development environment and business process improvements. Create the environment to allow your team to be productive and write maintainable code.
  • Partner with Architect and other SMEs to specify product and cloud infrastructure requirements, build supporting WBS, drive firmware development tasks in Agile
  • Facilitate requirements gathering and management, building team discipline in design and testing documentation.
  • Partner with cross-functional groups on design and implementation of new product features, resourcing and scheduling.
  • Work with the development team and manufacturers on troubleshooting hardware-firmware issues including those around integration, tools, processes, and testing
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills and able to work across multiple disciplines
  • Lead team toward higher technical and operational excellence
  • Evaluate resource needs, manage capacity constraints, help unblock dependencies gating execution
  • Cultivate creativity, speed, innovation, customer focus and a fun work environmentRequired Qualifications:
    • Bachelor's degree in computer science or related discipline and 10+ years of related experience and 5+ years managing firmware teams
    • Experience working with Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) methodologies (Agile and Waterfall)
    • Experience in M2M communication protocols (such as Sunspec, MQTT, Modbus, CAN bus, proprietary) and transport layers (such as WIFI, serial, TCP, PLC)
    • Deep understanding of encapsulation and object-oriented design
    • Extensive experience with embedded systems including multi-threaded system concepts including tasks, priorities, deadlock etc
    • Strong background in C++ code for embedded devices (mainly embedded Linux)
    • Experience with Wi-Fi, Cellular and Internetworking
    • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and writing skillsPreferred Qualifications:
      • Master's degree in computer science or related field
      • Understanding of the product life cycle and testing of products from inception to end of life
      • Comfortable working on a fast-paced, global team
      • Detail oriented and organized
      • Fundamental understanding of power electronics, IOT platforms, and/or power line communications issues
      • Understanding of power conversion technology for solar, energy storage, electric vehicles or UPS.Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
        • Ability to work in a lab with electrical hardware and test equipment
        • Must be local and based in Richmond, CA (preferred) or Austin, TX
