DescriptionJob Description Title:College and Career Counseling CoordinatorDivision:Upper SchoolLocation: Making Waves Academy Richmond Reports to: Director of College & Career Counseling Status: Full-time, Exempt (Year-Round)Position SummaryUnder the direction of the Director of College and Career Counseling. The College and Career Counseling Coordinator provides college and career guidance to students in individual and group settings. Additionally, the Coordinator provides a wide range of administrative support to enable the College and Career Counseling Center to meet strategic priorities and maximize engagement throughout the year. The Coordinator creates an efficient and seamless experience for everyone who interacts with the College and Career Counseling Center, especially students, parents, faculty, staff, administration, college admission representatives, career industry representatives, and other partners. The individual in this role will run highly effective and smoothly-functioning systems that support the day-to-day functioning of the counseling program, including special events and other activities. The Coordinator establishes and maintains positive working relationships with the school community, exercising discretion in making recommendations or resolving problems in the best interest of the College and Career Counseling Center. Primary ResponsibilitiesEarly Awareness and Exposure to Post-secondary Pathways---Deliver an approach to college and career counseling that spans grades 5-12 and is consistent with the vision and mission of Making Waves in supporting a continuum of post-secondary pathways, with an emphasis on college.---Under the supervision of the Director of College and Career Counseling, provide individual and group counseling to students and families regarding major exploration, post-secondary pathway exploration, and college eligibility. ---Lead efforts for students to explore the full spectrum of college and career options through individual and group counseling sessions, field trips, roundtable discussions with representatives, curriculum for Advisory period, the Case Study and College Fair, Career Day, and other programming.Post-secondary Skills Development---In alignment with the strategic objectives of Making Waves, and with support from the Director of College and Career Counseling, implement a developmentally appropriate, school-wide curriculum for college and career access that begins in middle school.---Assist students in developing college readiness skills and competencies that can enable college-bound students to persist and complete college in a timely manner.---Advise students to participate in extracurricular activities that cultivate skills needed to compete in college and career, including community service, school clubs, artistic and athletic involvement, work experience, enrichment programs, leadership experience, internship experience, and a capstone project.Planning and Administrative---Plan and lead exam registration and administration for PSAT, SAT, ACT, and AP. This is seasonal and only occurs: Once in the Fall semester and once in the Spring semester.---Lead the planning and execution of college and career readiness events and activities, including presentations, field trips, workshops, fairs, assessments, meetings, focus groups, and special programs. Provide administrative support for the execution of the Advisory curriculum and programming.---Under the supervision of the Director of College and Career Counseling, create, implement, and adapt administrative and communication systems based on the dynamic needs of the College and Career Center.Communications---Create and implement communication strategies to alert the school community of counseling services, resources, and upcoming events and activities through wall displays, letters, flyers, mailers, hall passes, and other materials, and meet engagement goals.---Compile and maintain confidential information, including student records, in Naviance and other case management systems, and ensure accuracy.---Create a roster of MWA alumni to support initiatives for the Alumni Community.---Engage with families to increase education on college and career readiness.Logistics---Provide logistical support in processing college applications, scholarship applications, and standardized tests, including account registration, payment, and recordkeeping.---Prepare a variety of reports, records, and files; organize and submit supporting documents as part of the college application process.---Monitor assigned budgets and track expenditures.---Take and transcribe minutes.Organizational Alignment---Demonstrate knowledge of, and support, Making Waves Academy's mission, core values, standards, competencies, and code of conduct outlined in the Employee Handbook.---Commitment to become an active participant in the school community - attending school competitions, performances, assemblies, and extracurricular activities.Additional Responsibilities and ExpectationsMission Alignment---Demonstrate knowledge of, and support, Making Waves Academy's mission, core values, standards, competencies, and code of conduct outlined in the Employee Handbook.---Participate in the school community - attending school competitions, performances, assemblies, and extracurricular activities.Other---Perform additional duties as assigned.Work EnvironmentThis job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as laptop computers, photocopiers and smartphones.Physical DemandsWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary, and sit for long periods of time.TravelSome travel required for MWA related events, such as workshops or conferences.QualificationsExperience---1-2 years successful secondary-school counseling experience or administrative experience preferred.---1+ years of experience with program logistics, project management, and/or administrative support on activities that are "high stakes," detail-oriented, and occur under time and pressure situations. Teaching experience may be considered. ---Experience in managing and organizing multiple complex projects in a team based environment---Experience working with students and families from historically underserved communities---Interest in college and career counseling preferred---Excellent written and oral communications skillsSkills---Highly effective and professional communication skills with staff, students and families---Ability to adapt and align on school-related initiatives---Highly organized, goal-oriented, and focused on outcomes---Ability to communicate with and build relationships with students and their families in the culturally and linguistically diverse MWA community---Ability to uphold and reinforce school policies and procedures when addressing students and families ---Ability to work collaboratively and independently---Ability to work effectively in fast-paced environments with limited supervision---Demonstrate an understanding of technology and literacy learning platforms (Microsoft Office Suite, PowerSchool, Canvas, Blackboard, Google Drive and Calendar, if applicable)---Professional orientation - appearance, communication, organization, and attitudeEducation---Bachelor's Degree in Social Welfare, Sociology, Education, or related field---Certification in college counseling desired but not requiredPreferred---Spanish language proficiency preferred but not required
