The Position

Genentech seeks a computational chemist with strong experience in structure-based drug design, ligand-based design, cheminformatics, and scientific programming to join our Computational Drug Discovery group within the Discovery Chemistry Department. In addition to applying computational chemistry methods to support drug discovery, optimization, and development within medicinal chemistry project team settings, you will engage in scientific programming to enhance our scientific methods and capabilities. You will interact closely with interdisciplinary small molecule discovery project team members and other members of the Computational Chemistry and Cheminformatics group. The position entails approximately 50% application-oriented computational chemistry and 50% software development/support, including cheminformatics and computational chemistry tool development and integration from 3rd parties.

You will have access to state of the art modeling, simulation, and machine learning technologies as well as computing infrastructure, and be able to leverage rich collections of data to accelerate drug discovery in a fast-paced and creative environment. Based at our beautiful South San Francisco campus, you will join our computational chemists, cheminformaticians, and software engineers who are committed to discovering new medicines to address unmet medical needs. Who You Are

* Ph.D. or equivalent in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biophysics, or other related disciplines.
* 5+ years of Industry experience in small molecule drug discovery is required.
* Strong experience in structure and ligand-based design, QSAR, QSPR, conformational analysis, physical chemical property modeling, molecular mechanics and dynamics, quantum mechanics, statistical design of experiments, multiparameter optimization, and A.I./machine learning is needed.
* Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills are essential.
* We also require a sophisticated understanding of algorithms and methods for computational chemistry and cheminformatics/database applications, along with demonstrated understanding of software development strategy and practice.
* A solid understanding of experimental assay methods and technology used to identify and quantify protein-ligand interactions, a working knowledge of in vitro/in vivo DMPK principles, and a strong record of publications and presentations are necessary.
* Practical, working experience with computational chemistry software from companies such as Chemical Computing Group, Dotmatics, Schrodinger, OpenEye, and Gaussian.
* Knowledge of multivariate statistics, machine learning, deep learning approaches is desirable.
